Title: The mathematics of multi-scale challenges in continuum physics

Talk Abstract:

Understanding the dynamical behavior of complex fluids and materials undergoing phase transitions is very challenging and this requires to master a broad set of mathematical methods and computational algorithms. This lecture will present the main challenges arising in physical applications (liquid-vapor mixtures, prediction of tsunami in the ocean, etc.) in which the presence of highly nonlinear waves (material interfaces, shock waves) and multiple scales or parameters (viscosity, capillarity, heat conduction, etc) make these problems extremely difficult. This lecture will review the mathematical and computational methods developed in the past twenty years for this broad field of nonlinear hyperbolic systems of conservation laws. Brief Bio of Speaker:
Philippe LeFloch is a Director of Research at the University of Paris 6 (since 2005) after holding positions in the United States, including at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Science (New York University). After graduating from the Ecole Normale Supérieure, he received a Ph.D. in applied mathematics from the Ecole Polytechnique and a Habilitation Diploma in applied mathematics from the University of Paris 6. His main expertise is on partial differential equations and on applications to fluid dynamics and related fields. He is internationally recognized for key achievements on the mathematics and numerics of multi-scale problems. In 1995, he received the Faculty Early Career Development Award from the National Science Foundation. He has published more than 200 research papers with about 100 different co-authors, and published a book entitled ``Hyperbolic Systems of Conservation Laws''.
